Access to Capital
Community investing is the practice of lending or investing in communities that are marginalized or excluded from mainstream economic markets and lack access to traditional financial institutions. Community investment organizations facilitate access to debt and equity financing as well as basic banking products and services through local organizations that combine financial expertise with a commitment to serving distressed communities.
These organizations provide financial services to underserved individuals, small businesses, and non-profits that in turn provide affordable housing, healthcare and other vital community services. The community investing sector is experiencing significant growth. According to the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund, an independent agency of the US Treasury Department, there are currently more than 800 certified CDFIs across the United States.
The Opportunity Finance Network, a trade association representing private sector CDFIs, estimates that these institutions hold approximately $30 billion in assets. Similarly, The National Alliance of Community Economic Development Associations estimates there are more than 4,600 community development corporations working to revitalize distressed communities by building affordable housing and providing critical services to the most vulnerable residents such as youth, families and those with disabilities.
