Microfinance
Microfinance institutions,(MFIs) provide credit and other financial services to individuals, entrepreneurs and small enterprises worldwide that are underserved by traditional banking and financial services. Since the pioneering efforts of the Grameen Bank in the 1970s, microfinance institutions have been multiplying and expanding across the globe. They have demonstrated that when low-income and self-employed entrepreneurs have access to credit, they not only repay these loans but they become self-reliant.
By far the most advanced of all domestic and international social capital markets, MFIs deployed over $25 billion in capital by 2006. This market has expanded from providing small loans to the establishment of dynamic full-service MFIs that provide loans, consumer banking services, and insurance products to millions of customers worldwide.
