Agriculture Holds the Key
The 1990 US Farm Bill defines sustainable agriculture as an integrated system of plant and animal production practices that satisfies human needs, enhances ecosystems, uses resources efficiently (including natural biological cycles and controls where appropriate), sustains economic viability of farm operations, and enhances quality of life for farmers and society over the long term.
Investments in sustainable farming can help farmers implement best management practices, leverage government programs, establish and sell farming easements on the land, generate tradeable environmental credits as supplemental sources of farm revenue, and engage the local community through Community Supported Agricultural (CSA) initiatives. These investments can also reduce pollution in waterways, maintain scenic farming landscapes, produce healthier foods, and reengage communities as partners in successful enterprises. A related movement known as Slow Food defines itself as “an idea, a way of living and a way of eating. It is a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members around the world that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment.”
Mission Markets facilitates capital raising for sustainable agriculture including various sub-sectors such as: landscape management, waste management, farm inputs, organic certified farmland and urban agriculture. Our marketplace facilitates investment and trading in farming co-op shares, investments in sustainable agriculture funds and the establishment of a market for farm-related ecosystem credits.
